  52. transportation services, including launch services, on a commercial
  53. basis.  Certain exceptions are allowed. For example, because of
  54. national security concerns, some DoD hardware may not be placed on
  55. commercial launches.

  92. The SRBs use ammonium perchlorate (NH4ClO4) plus aluminum powder and a
  93. synthetic rubber.  The SSMEs burn liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen.
  94. The small maneuvering engines burn monomethyl hydrazine (CH3NHNH2) or
  95. some variant thereon (there are various hydrazine-based fuels) and
  96. nitrogen tetroxide (N2O4).  The various small solids for things like
  97. SRB ejection I don't have data on, but figuring them as similar to the
  98. SRBs is close enough.

  100. The rubber in the SRBs is probably a petrochemical, and hydrogen (when
  101. made by the usual industrial process) is too.  The methyl group in MMH
  102. is probably oil-derived as well.  Probably much more significant, though,
  103. is all the fossil-fuel-dependent support equipment, e.g. the aircraft.
  104.  
  105. However... the amounts of petrochemicals used in spaceflight are tiny
  106. by industrial standards, and spaceflight would probably have a high
  107. priority on available reserves.  Remember that there are US oilfields
  108. that are owned by the US government, e.g. the Naval Petroleum Reserve,
  109. specifically to ensure availability of oil for crucial functions in
  110. the event of major disruption.  Non-essential flights might be cancelled
  111. or postponed, but there would be no great problem keeping the shuttle
  112. operating for functions considered important enough.

  142.         Does Galileo carry equipment similar to Magellan?  If so, then why
  143. send Magellan at all?  Especially if the VEEGA plan was conceived before
  144. Magellan was launched.  It just seems that the Galileo could have done
  145. both tasks for less money.

  157.         I'm compiling a list of space launches and landings (or crashings,
  158. in the case of decaying orbits) and I was wondering if you could help,
  159. specifically:
  160.         When exactly did the Solar Maximum Mission satellite fall?
  161.         What are the dates, highlights, payloads, crew, etc of the
  162. shuttle flights since they began anew with (I think) STS-28.
  163.         Also, why was the old method of naming flights abandoned?  You know,
  164. STS-51J and all that.
